Cyst following root canal?

More curious than anything, I have been referred but may go private if required! I had a root canal carried out about 18months ago. Since then I have developed a lump up in the gum, it's quite solid, hard to press and I get occasional headaches that feel like they stem from it.
The dentist has x-rayed and says she can't see anything obvious on the x-ray so I am just wondering how common this is :) Any experiences?
