Looking For A New Job

Hi All

To cut a long story short, I'm a marketing professional who is currently unemployed and have been for 7 weeks now. Although I have over 10+ years experience, I'm finding it difficult in finding a job. I regularly scour job boards and recruitment websites but it's been a challenge to say the least. When I do find opportunities, I apply but then either don't hear back (this is becoming the norm) or get rejected.

I'm also looking for temporary admin jobs just to keep me going and unsurprisingly even this is difficult.

Anybody else in a similar situation? Any hints, tips and or advice would be appreciated - as it's a tough time at the moment and really getting me down.

  • Go to a recuitment agency but keep an open mind as to the reality of the situation and what they are really offering.
  • I was in the some boat a few months back, must have put out around 50 applications and went to 5 or 6 interviews before getting a job.

How senior are the roles you're applying for? What city are they in and what aspect of marketing?

    Hi

I'm assuming you're also in Marketing or similar? At the moment it just feels like it's never going to happen and obviously feel very disheartened by it all. I just find that at the moment, regardless of who or where I apply I'm not getting a look in.

I've been in contact with specialist agencies, utilised LinkedIn as a tool but nothing so far. I'm searching for mid to senior manager roles. I live in the Midlands so I'm looking at cities close to me. In terms of marketing I'm lucky in the sense that my experience encompasses online and offline and I have a 360 background.
  • I'm in marketing too yes, moved role a few months back as my contract was ending and felt exactly like you for much of the process. Took loads of knockbacks but just plugged away, kept applying and ended up in a much better and more senior role than the one I left.

It's honestly just a numbers game. Tweak and refine your CV, have your LinkedIn fully up-to-date to reflect your CV, sign up with a couple of specialist marketing recruitment agencies and eventually the interviews will start coming.

I've been to see a careers advisor and he's suggested tweaking and changing the CV so that was a helpful exercise. I'll re upload it to the job websites, lets see where that takes me.

It can become stressful at times as you're constantly job hunting but not finding anything at all. When you have bills, family etc the financial aspect starts to become a challenge. I'll keep plugging away.
  • If you're at senior level then I'd recommend getting a few recruitment consultants onboard. Even though they're ruthless money grabbers, the higher your potential salary the bigger their cut so at more senior levels they'll put the work in to place you.

If you have a marketing background then the first thing to think about it how you market yourself to stand out against all of the other applicants.
