Back in 2002 we took out a mortgage, and the provider stated that we needed to have insurance to cover payments. Their own product seemed expensive, so we went elsewhere and took out a life assurance / critical illness policy with a different provider. This has just sat in the background ever since, and we just assumed it was necessary. Recently I was told that PPI in these circumstances was NOT mandatory, and that I should attempt to reclaim same/all of the subsequent outlay. However as the PPI was not taken out with the mortgage provider, only on their advice, I don't think that we could claim against them. Have any other members been in this situation ?

You have no one to complain to as you sourced and bought your own policy. You may have mis bought, but you weren't mis sold.
You can claim on the policy if you've suffered a claimable event.0 -
Life assurance and Critical Illness cover is NOT PPI.0

There were still some lenders that required life assurance back in 2002. Not many as most stopped by the late 90s. So, the scenario is potentially correct.Recently I was told that PPI in these circumstances was NOT mandatory, and that I should attempt to reclaim same/all of the subsequent outlay.
Two mistakes here.
1 - With some mortgage deals, MPPI was a necessary requirement and in those cases, it cannot be missold.
2 - Life assurance and CIC is not PPI.However as the PPI was not taken out with the mortgage provider, only on their advice, I don't think that we could claim against them.
Correct. You have to transact using the agency of the adviser for them to carry liability.0
