HMRC - Words Fail Me ......

..... but I will have a go ;)

What an absolute farce / joke / scandal / c#ck-up you name it

This is the same HMRC that petitioned for my BR , sending me RECORDED DELIVERY letters many times

The BR was based on my lack of completing Self Assessment forms , now I am wondering why I even bothered filling them in  I know this current scandal is Child Benefit related, but believe me, this is the tip of a very big iceberg.

This HMRC is the same one that hassled me for years into supplying THEM information that THEY already had, all my PAYE Tax that had been put in their safe hands, but as I had not filled in the SA forms, they were unable to retrieve that information themselves  therefore sending me ever increasing final demands peaking at £96,000 , which finally was reduced to £36,000 which broadly speaking I agreed to.

But throughout all my dealings with the various HMRC departments, they have ALL made mistakes constantly, but if I dare to respond late due to personal difficulties they come down on me like a tonne of bricks

Absolute bunch of muppets, and if I worked for them I would be ashamed to associate myself with an organisation like that.

And as I said - tip of the iceberg , do you realise how many Banks, Companies, Government Organisations hold YOUR DATA in such an easily accessible manner

I work in "IT" and to be brutally honest, if I had wanted to during the years leading up to my BR, I could EASILY have gathered together enough Data from the places I worked at.

I still work at a Bank  even after BR , ironically I probably will not get another job after this one finishes, as the BR will come up at application, but being here already ..... well let's just say it is easier for my Manager to keep me on rather than get a new person :p

The Bank I work in had a major flash alert today about the danger of ID Fraud :rotfl: Also the article informed us of many recent cases of "insider fraud" which have resulted in PRISON SENTENCES ....... as if that is going to put people off if they are determined.

If you just think of all these "call centres" staffed with all levels of people, there is so much scope for things to go wrong.

One final word ..... the Data was supposedly being sent to the AUDIT OFFICE  WHY ??????? That seems to have gone right over the heads of most reporters

BOY OH BOY AM I GLAD I HAVE NO CREDIT FOR PEOPLE TO STEAL

  • Hi TaxAvoider!!

Your story is so similar to mine, and I also share the bitterness on this. They decreed that I was liable for money that I didn't owe, and could prove I didn't owe - and yet now the whole country is at risk of having their identities cloned!!

It begs the question - what on EARTH was all that information doing on a CD in the first place? It is surely a very sensative database and should only ever be stored on a password protected server?

Proud to have dealt with my debts
  • Maybe all 25m involved should claim compensation for all the stress this is going to cause.................might make sure they dont do something so stupid again.

I hate the fact that you are the biggest sinner ever if you are 1 day late in replying to HMRC , but , if like now , there may be delays in paying benefits then that is OK.

If you made a film with a storyline like what has happened .........no one would believe it:rolleyes:

13 Compensation for failure to comply with certain requirements

    (1) An individual who suffers damage by reason of any contravention by a data controller of any of the requirements of this Act is entitled to compensation from the data controller for that damage.

    (2) An individual who suffers distress by reason of any contravention by a data controller of any of the requirements of this Act is entitled to compensation from the data controller for that distress if—
    (a) the individual also suffers damage by reason of the contravention, or
    (b) the contravention relates to the processing of personal data for the special purposes.

    (3) In proceedings brought against a person by virtue of this section it is a defence to prove that he had taken such care as in all the circumstances was reasonably required to comply with the requirement concerned.

(Official extract from the data protection act 1998).

Perhaps 25 million of us should club together and claim compensation (if needed of course)?

Good luck to anyone trying to steal my identity. But I'm still hacked off to say the very least that my personal confidential data is out there somewhere.

I keep reading that there's no evidence of fraud, and hanging unsaid in the air is the word "Yet"...
