Council Tax reduction as a student

in Cutting tax
I am considering a full time course at a local college as a mature student.
I pay my council tax by monthly direct debit.
The full time one year course with 30 studying hours per week starts in September 2019 and ends in May 2020.
How is the council tax student discount calculated?
Does the discount apply on a month by month basis from September 2019 to May 2020 or is it effective for a complete year?

Don't get council tax reduction and the council tax disregard mixed up.How is the council tax student discount calculated?
Council tax reduction is means tested whereas the council tax student disregard leads to a 25% or 50% discount (or exemption in some cases) based simply on being a qualifying student.
The one you want is the council tax disregard, this applies for the whole course providing you meet the requirements (which, on the face of it, you do). It would be applied for the whole period of the course and, if need be, then adjusted if you ceased being a student before the end of the course.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
