Aggressive Jobcentre Advisor?

Currently out of work doing 2 days volunteering as a Cancer Administrator and 1 day IT course, i am following a plan i used last time to get back into work and impress employers.

Unfortunately the new adviser has told me that i must aim for Care Work and forget about Admin, Refuse and Litter picking or Cleaning that i did in the past.

She says although i have never done Care Work before i must go in this direction as She told me i'm not confident enough or intelligent enough for Admin and simply won't get the other options on my agreement and so need to aim very low, She claims She might be able to get me a zero hour contract in Care Work.

I do get about 2 Interviews every fortnight on average and i'm doing the Volunteering to give myself solid references and i do feel very low being told i'm not good enough to back into Admin.
I witnessed her talking to another client over the phone telling him not to ever put family before work, She told him Work comes first and Family comes second out aloud on the phone, this attitude seems wrong to me but in this situation i just feel like an Ant:(

    !!!!!!.
You are clearly intelligent as you have come on here to query it.

You have admin experience, keep plugging away and you will secure something you like :)

Have you registered with agencies to get temp work? Quite often that leads to permanent work.

Ignore the silly child, she is clearly on a power trip!

Others will be along to say what you can do about her.

I’m so very sorry to hear this, it must be very demoralising to hear that.

I’m sure more experienced members will be along soon to give you more constructive advice as to where to go with this but I didn’t want to read the message and not respond.

Well done on the volunteer work I am sure that this will indeed look good on your CV and for your own well-being it’s good you have some structure to your week.

Can I ask how long you’ve been out of work for?
  • Dont take it too badly, she sounds like a complete a55h**e

You are bright enough to be getting yourself some references and doing volunteer work so that already proves her a numpty!

Work before family......another trumped up wannabe jobsworth then!

You know what your capable of, just hang it there til it catches up with you.

    Good Luck!
  • FGS care work requires a totally check able background. when are dumbo's going to realise this.

In my area, whilst other services aren't good our job centre is, dedicated to finding times which will be quieter for the upset and known to cry claimant etc. :o

Even my parents said you want to turn down work, you go to work in a charity shop.

Thankyou ,I have been out of work for 8 months so far and wonder if this is why the insults and pressure are being applied.

So 8 months isn’t ideal however you have not just sat on your backside during that time, your are doing something constructive with your time and I’m sure a different job coach would have a more praising attitude towards this.

The fact you are getting interviews is encouraging and I truly do not see a reason why you should not be aiming for roles where you have experience as it’s an asset. Please don’t lose heart over what has been said to you, the work coach was unprofessional and you are clearly more intelligent than they wish to give you credit for

Bear in mind that you are doing that voluntary work and IT course courtesy of Mr and Ms T.Payer....

If you are right about the language used towards you then that is certainly bad. I would at least explore whether you have grounds to make a complaint to anyone, and maybe request a new advisor. Anything possibility related to a disability etc?

But in terms of your period of unemployment, you advise us that:

    - You have been out of work for 8 months

    - You average 2 INTERVIEWS (not applications, which will be higher) per fortnight (or 1 a week for ease).

So that's maybe 30-35 interviews in the last 8 months?

I wouldn't call you anything which your advisor called you (because it's untrue), but there does appear to be something amiss with your approach to interviews.....

I think the advisor should be helping you to prepare for these interviews which is all the more reason why you should request a new one. But your situation does seem borderline far-fetched to be honest, as a lot of the time an interview for an Admin job is more a formality in that they already like your CV! Something surely has to be amiss here...

The pessimist in me thinks that you may be happy with your current arrangement and so not too motivated towards doing well in the interviews. The optimist in me thinks that your interviewing skills need sprucing up.

Aim VERY LOW to care work, how disgusting, wait until she needs care, stupid ignorant woman. I get very angry when care work is described as a low job, it is a very responsible job and takes a special person.

It sounds very much as if the advisor has one interest only, and that is to get the correct boxes ticked to ensure they hit performance targets. No matter how long I had been out of work there is nothing on this earth which would make me work in the care sector. I had a brother who became severely disabled when I was 20 and I couldn't do any of the 'messy' work to help support him - I was physically sick every time I tried. If I couldn't do it for him, I certainly wouldn't be able to do it for a stranger.

TBH when I read the OP I wondered if the DWP advisor was getting a backhander from the care agency!
