I retired last November. My total earnings for the year, including a small pension, came to less than the tax free allowance. Will I automatically get a rebate for the tax I paid, or do I have to claim it?

In my experience as far as I recall you'll automatically be told (by post) that you have a rebate waiting and you then go into your online tax account and provide the bank details for them to tranfer the money.
Edit:
If you haven't already set up a personal tax account here's the link to do so.

The only times it wouldn't normally be refunded automatically are if you either
A). Have to complete a Self Assessment return for the tax year in question
. The pension company have already refunded it as part of your regular pension payments (though you would usually have noticed this at the time) 0
