Income tax rebate - automatic?

Options
I retired last November. My total earnings for the year, including a small pension, came to less than the tax free allowance. Will I automatically get a rebate for the tax I paid, or do I have to claim it?

In my experience as far as I recall you'll automatically be told (by post) that you have a rebate waiting and you then go into your online tax account and provide the bank details for them to tranfer the money.

    Edit:

If you haven't already set up a personal tax account here's the link to do so.

  • The only times it wouldn't normally be refunded automatically are if you either

A). Have to complete a Self Assessment return for the tax year in question
B). The pension company have already refunded it as part of your regular pension payments (though you would usually have noticed this at the time)
