Not happy - can they do this? (a rant)

I contacted a broker called L&C and said I wanted whatever the mortgage was with the lowest set-up fees.

In the key facts illustration They recommended Scottish Widows, fee-free, with £300 cashback (although the legal fees would only total £250 if I used their solicitors). They told me they would be NO VALUATION, NO SET-UP costs and the only thing I would have to pay is this £25 for funds transferring, so we went ahead and made an application to Scottish Widows.

Anyway I have had a telephone call today from Scottish Widows asking me for £175 for a valuation fee. I said I was under the impression it was fee free, and she said that was only for re-mortgages who already borrow with them.

I didn't think it sounded right so I asked her to phone back later while I went home and checked my KFI.

I checked it, and in black and white it did state that no valuation fee was payable.

So when she's phoned me back I have told her this and she said "Oh I'm sorry but because it needs more looking into because of your other financial commitments, we are having to charge for the valuation!!" (who hasn't got other financial commitments???).

Anyway I've told them at this moment in time I am not happy to pay it (perhaps after Christmas but not now) so to put the matter on hold, but I'm spitting feathers about how they can move the goalposts after an application has been made.

I'm really not impressed!

  • Don't they normally put in their advertising the offer can be withdrawn at any time without notice? so you may think you're getting the best deal but "sorry it finished the other day, so here's a more expensive one", complain in writing & send it registered (I think that's the one they sign for) then they can't tell you they never received it.

Amazing. You use a broker and the broker sorts the problem out. Who would have guessed it ;)
