What are the issues with moving from one SIPP provider to another,
I am assuming that you would have to cash in all investment and convert to cash?
Is moving SIPP a common practice or rarely done?

Depends why you want to move and whether the new provider will alleviate the problems you are having which make you want to move.
Ask the new provider if they will accept an in specie transfer (most won't).
Nothing unusual about moving a SIPP.0 -
I thought that most will accept in specie transfers IF they offer exactly the same fund/share, but I could be wrong .Ask the new provider if they will accept an in specie transfer (most won't)
In any case in specie transfers will take longer than cash transfers even if they are allowed.
Transferring a SIPP or a PP is quite common but be aware that some providers charge transfer out fees and extra for in specie transfers . On the other hand the one you are transferring to may offer to pay the fees for you . Plus there are cashback offers for transferring from time to time0
