DBS check, is it needed?

Does anyone know if employing friends, whom in the past have held DBS checks (ex teachers) to work a few hours per month with young adults with learning disabilities need to get DBS checked?

We the parents who are employing them and have known them for many years are all quite happy with them not having the DBS, but is this illegal not to have one?

I think there is a legal requirement, but if there isnt I would have thought current ones would be prudent.

As Ronald Reagan used to say - Trust but Verify. :)

If you have known them for many years, trust your judgement. Buying a government 'safety certificate' will add nothing for you.

Believing you know somebody, and actually knowing everything about them are two very different things. One person we had known for many years was convicted of child pornography offences. Even his wife had been unaware. As said above, trust but verify, particularly where children are involved.

For how little it costs to set up the update service, wouldn't you want to be above board?

Anything could have happened between the last known check and now, exercise a duty of care and seek new certificates.

Always get a DBS check, you never know why has happened in between checks. It simply isn’t worth the risk of not bothering

Get your own checks done. In theory I think they are transferable (if the person already has one) but each of the organistations I have worked with have insisted on their own DBS check.

I worked with a charity and had to get one for that. Then I became a coach at my son's football team. Each of the organisations acknowledged that the other DBS report was "probably" ok they got their own checks done anyway.
  • "Trust but Verify". What a witless oxymoron. "Don't Trust", in other words.

Nod, people that say it really mean "trust no-one", but don't want to say so.
