Signing as a witness for somebodies mortgage

Hi i was recently asked to sign as a witness to a couples mortgage papers. Ive never had a mortgage so had no idea why this was done. I was told by them that all i was signing for was to say that it was definitely them that had signed. So i went round and signed. They had already signed their sections before i got there.

When i told a family member i had done this they were mad with me for signing these papers without researching into what it was and that i had not actually seen this couple physically sign. The reason why is because this guy has only known his girlfriend a year and is putting her on his mortgage that is nearly mortgage free and that numerous people have commented that she is a gold digger.

So now im worried that should their relationship go wrong can i get dragged into any mess by signing what i signed and the fact that i did not actually witness them signing themselves (although both were present when i signed under their signatures)

You're just witnessing that they're the people who signed. You should have seen them sign but it's not a big deal.

Any digging of gold or any other precious metals is between them and them alone.

You witnessing their signatures is going to be last thing they'll be worrying should their relationship breakdown. Solicitor is the one to advise \ suggest to their clients appropriate action that can be taken in such circumstances.

It's sufficient if they told you the signatures were theirs. You don't need to witness them signing.

There's no liability for a witness. You're not responsible for the document, or even expected to read it. In fact, it's considered rude to read it, as it's none of your business. If there's ever a dispute about the signatures, you might be contacted to confirm exactly what you witnessed. Just tell the truth.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
