Food shopping online

Just wondering, do you do your food shop mainly online or do you go to the supermarket?

I live on my own and find it easier to food shop online and get it delivered to the door as I don't drive but I am just wondering if going to the supermarket may save me more money.

it can save you money as it's all too easy to buy more than you need when you shop online, but if you make a list first & stick to it then you should be ok. It saves us money & a lot of time as we live a very long way away from the supermarket and the small village shops here are charge a small fortune for most things. If I lived close to a supermarket I'd prefer to go to it rather than shop online though as I'd be able to look for yellow sticker bargains and save more that way.

You might be able to save money if you were to shop at Aldi or Lidl. Do you make use of the new customer offers for the online supermarkets ?

If you were to not use online but do it yourself would you be able to use public transport to get it home.
Could you use online shopping to get the heavy stuff delivered and you buy the rest in store.
Do you live near any of the supermarkets.

In my last flat I used to have home delivery as I couldn't carry a weeks shopping up the stairs to the flat.

Now I'm in a first floor flat I do supermarket shopping and take my OH to carry most of it up for me, costs me a beer :D

Thanks for your replies. Tonight I went to a local supermarket but my brother came and drove me home. What I used to do before online shopping was go to the supermarket and get a taxi home, the fare wouldn't cost much as the supermarket isn't too far away but I still wouldn't want to carry more than one bag on the bus. I buy my cat food and tinned stuff etc online and fresh stuff at the store but usually at the express smaller stores in town as its easier for me as I work full time in town and am always there.

Depends what I need and which supermarket has what on the offer. I’m buying the same stuff so know how much the usual price is.
If I need to stock up on cupboard items I order online delivery- again depends on what I need from which supermarket. I have one child with ASD so have to buy particular stuff.
I live away from town so super saver delivery in a middle of a week for £1-3 is still less than cost of fuel to go to town and come back( and not to mention the time).
I’m also working nightshifts only so try to grab things after work. I have tesco, asda and morrisons available, lidl and aldi are still closed when I finish.

I think it depends on your shopping personality.

For me, shopping online saves me a lot of money as I am easily distracted in store and end up buying far more than I need. At home, I can sit at my desk with a meal plan in front of me, no distractions, no idiots trying to ram me with their trolley. I add what I want to my basket then go back through it all, removing impulse buys and bringing the total down to what I want it to be. I wouldn't do that at a till in a shop! I don't generally find much we need with yellow stickers either, so I'm not missing much there.

We have shopped online since its invention! For us,it saves money. Also, why would you take time to travel to the store, pick and put stuff into the trolley, unload the trolley to pay,re- load the trolley, take it to the car,un-load the trolley into the boot, drive home,un-load the boot, take it indoors and put it away?

For three quid,Tesco do that for us!

When I had family at home I liked online shopping. Now as a singleton I just don’t buy enough at a time to make it worthwhile, plus do most of my shopping in Aldi or Lidl.

I love to shop but using 2 walking sticks and not being able to drive i have to either use home delivery or get someone to drive me. The local butcher does a great deal of 7 items for £25 and i divide that up and freeze them.I prefer Asda for home delivery as the delivery person puts my freezer stuff into my freezer my fridge stuff in front of the fridge and the rest on my kitchen table.

OP if you want to save money on your food shopping DON'T use supermarkets. As above most local independent shops have much better prices and a much better range of cheaper cuts i.e. ox liver, lambs heart, wild rabbit etc etc.

Many people here rave about Lidl/Aldi but for instance they're nearly 3 times more expensive on vine tomatoes than my local high turn over Indy.

Go explore and save a ton of money to boot!
