Idea,s needed please

Hi all, just wondered if anyone can help, my middle son is 19 and lives with his g/f he is off to uni next year and is keen to learn how to cook. Can anyone recommend an easy to follow cooking book that isnt too expensive, managed to pick up a Jamie Oliver xmas cooking dvd in home bargains but would love to get him a book for xmas. Amazon has various student cookbooks and cooking on a budget which can be bought cheaply form their sellers.
  • Nigel Slaters 'Real Fast Food' is good - it's paperback and has plenty of quick and easy recipes - both student-y and a bit posher.

If he likes his cakes and puddings, then I'd say the Be-Ro cookbook is worth picking up too - you can get it from their site, or it is often to be found at the tills in the Co-op for about £1.

You could do both for less than £10 and, as long as you tell him where to find the OS board, you'll have set him up for life

  • I used to use Cas Clarke's books all the time; cheap books and cheap ingredients but tasty recipes. http://www.whsmith.co.uk/whs/go.asp?isbn=0747261717&DB=220

oh, just Googled it and there's a website of the same name:

You could make this into a really nice hamper - with the DVD you already have, a cookbook, and a few bits and bobs such as a pack of wooden spoons, a garlic crusher and a tin opener (which you could get from the pound shop, if you have one near you), and parcel it all up inside a big saucepan!
