Housewarming gift ideas please?

Hi, I have been invited to a housewarming, which it turns out is THIS SATURDAY!!!!!! eek. I have no idea of a present, so any ideas would be welcome.

The people have both lived in separate houses (2nd time around for both) so have everything they might need. It is my college lecturer that has invited me, although I don't know her partner very well. They are in their 30s/40s.

Something unusual would be nice (and not to costly for a poor student like me, lol).

Thanks

  • Just turn up with a bottle of wine and/or a nice plant (always better than cut flowers IMO because the host doesn't have to worry about putting them in a vase, and a plant should last for years). It's only a housewarming, not a wedding, and those are the sorts of gifts that you can never have too many of and don't cost the earth! I know you were after something unusual, but especially as you don't know them all that well I would suggest taking a more conventional gift.
  • I have found a scented candle (M&S £5) is lovely and there are Christmas colours out now. They burn for ages.:T

I second meanymoo's idea about a potted plant or wine. I'm in my mid 30's and would appreciate both as a gift
  • A selection of sizes of energy saving light bulbs. I guarantee nobody else will have thought of it and it will be talked about for ages. Plus good for the planet and electricity bill

    Hiya

I bought my friend a few little things for her new house and she said the most useful thing I bought was the house / home magazines I had bought.

  • How about making up a small pot of plants for outside, you can put some winter flowering pansies in now & whatever else is green & then underplant with crocus's etc for spring. It shouldn't cost a bomb & is a nice personal touch. Some small nurseries near us are selling pots etc for 1/2 price, so I am going to do some for family members for Christmas.

    Love Suzi xx
  • I'd take a batch of home-made muffins *drools* :D
Cos I don't shine if you don't shine.

The traditional gift for a housewarming is bread and salt. You could find lovely artisan bread and sea salt to be a bit special about it.

Or muffins. They're like bread only better.
