O/S Daily Sunday 16th June 2019

This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

    Good morning everyone :hello:

It's a bright and sunny morning here, I have been up a while as I heard Lilly crawl through the door at 5am this morning after being out clubbing to celebrate finishing college. I do not expect to see her anytime soon today :rotfl:.

I have fed the animals and now I am sitting here trying to plan my day. Steve is in charge of the kitchen today even though it is Father's Day but Lee has bought him a big piece of steak as a present so he will be happy. There is a lamb shank in the freezer for me and the kids are going to fend for themselves for a change.

I just want to weigh in on the board and lodge issue. We charge Phoebe a third of her wage but we take no more than £50 regardless. When she first started work, she didn't have very many hours so her keep was around £30 but now she is practically working full time we take a bit more from her. I would do it even if we could afford not to as it teaches them to budget and that is a very important lesson. She is saving a lot of her wages as she plans to move out and live in a house share with her friends in the future.

So today is Father's Day. I have been thinking about mine a lot and I would like to write a bit about him. His name was Ken, he was a very charming and attractive man with the gift of the gab. He also had bipolar and was a very violent and unpleasant man when ill. My sisters were all estranged from him with good reason but I managed to find a relationship with him. He absolutely doted on my children and was a lovely grumpy grampy. He was a heavy smoker and this eventually led to his demise as he had a serious heart condition. He has been gone now for 12 years but I miss him every day. I still find silly things online that he would have loved and have a sadness that I cannot share them with him. I will raise my cup of tea to him today and hope that he knew he was loved.

Steve has just got up and is making me a cuppa so I will love you and leave you. Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to and if today is bittersweet for whatever reason then have a big cwtch xx
  • OH's move yesterday was a farce. I ended up collecting him from the hospital and taking him to the care home. I have to say I am not really impressed. He is supposedly there until they can put a care package in place...........when we went in he was whisked off, not shown his room but dumped in the lounge with a cup of tea. I went and unpacked his things, very small room and no en suite, there is a wash basin though. I know he is not going to be happy there. I came home and cried.......I need to talk to him, if he does not feel happy I am going to bring him home. He is an active person, articulate and has an active mind.......it could take the SS weeks to get help in but I would rather do it myself until something is available. It may be that by the time they come to put a package in place he is ok. He has lost his confidence which is what happened last time he was in hospital.

I am going in to see him this morning, more news later.
  • Morning folks and thanks SO. Hope you soon start to feel better..You too are having an emotional time of it.

Another glorious start here but, guess what, rain is forecast for later. Yesterday afternoon we had the most torrential downpour we have had through this never ending wet spell.

As expected the trip to Planet Dance yesterday cost me an arm and a leg but isn't that what grandma's are for, to spoil the DGC once in a while! DGD was over the moon with her pointes and all the other necessary must-haves. Youngest managed to wangle a ballerina t shirt out of me too! Our family get together afterwards was lovely with much pizza, pasta and wine consumed! I didn't leave till after midnight but still couldn't sleep beyond my usual wake up time of 4.30. Bah.

I didn't get the weeding done at the front yesterday after all but no surprises there. I think once the gardener has done my makeover of the back garden I might ask him to come back and tidy up the front too.

TAFF I was so sorry to read about your dad. Such a worry. DP1, more worries for you too. I hope poor baby soon gets sorted out. REDRUBY you have my utmost admiration for sticking with the diet. Every day I start off with good intentions but it never lasts beyond lunchtime!

Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) for all who need/want them. Take care all xx

    Morning everyone

SO - thanks for starting us off x

Hugs to those that want/need one, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x

Happy birthday to those with a birthday x

Bright sunny start to the day here, drying up underfoot and temperature has risen nicely. Managed to get a line of washing dry yesterday also.

DH and myself enjoying first peaceful cuppas, DS1 still in his pit. DS2 settled and ok.

Dinner last night was chicken enchilades, skinny chips, side salad and coleslaw - lovely it was too, clean plates all round. Today lunch will be roast pork.

Yesterday work was steady but not that busy, back to it tomorrow.

Hoping to have a chilled day today.

    Keep safe and well x

    nmlc x

Csarina - just a thought after reading your post - I'd be very cautious taking DH home and looking after him yourself as if they think you can they'll possibly leave it to you and no care package will get offered. They will see it as you're capable and be his full time carer with no help.

    Good morning :)

Well my nothing day turned out quite busy with the premise that my legs stayed firmly up on the couch it was worth it they are not yelling at me today and add to that a 9hr sleep and self care was the order of the day. I had a lush steak and kidney pie from my freezer hunt which will serve today too so pop some mash on.

Full day today I have prep to do for next weeks courses and get my case and me packed and ready for a week in sunny Sheffield.

Thinking of my dad today and how different it was when he was here today would have been a huge carnivore meal with all his favourites and designer beer to accompany. I miss him so much every day his calmness and good advice and of course the patience needed to cope with my mother. I will raise a glass to him later and try to listen to the wise words he would have spoken to me.

OL Hope you are considering where your needs come into all the in fighting too.
taffSo sorry to hear about dad
SO I can recommend a rest day to get that energy back give in and look after yourself. Remember the oxygen mask principle you cant help others put theirs on if you haven't put yours on first

    Have a great day all

    Morning everyone

Well I'm still waiting for summer so that I can get out and about a bit more. It is beginning to feel like I will be waiting for it until next year :).

Unfortunately I'm still feeling very low and haven't done much other than necessary housework and shopping. I haven't even managed lunch out with a friend or my neighbour, although I am seeing a friend for lunch later in the week so hopefully that will help my mood.

I am waiting to hear back from the two voluntary opportunities that I applied to. I saw someone I used to volunteer with at an advice service in the week and they said that a lot of people are volunteering now as a way to get experience and a reference to apply for paid work so organisations in this area are not struggling to find people like they were in the past so we will see.

I have got a load in the washing machine and when that is finished I'll hang it out. It isn't raining so I should be able to get it dry outside. I fancy something different to eat today so will have a rummage in the freezer later.

Taff I'm sorry to hear about your dad, it must be a worrying time for you all. Take care of yourself as well.

csarina it sounds like the transfer to the care home was not at all well planned. I hope that when you visit your OH today he will be feeling a bit settled. It sounds like it would be a lot of work for you to care for him at home yourself.

TA it is a grandmother's job to spoil your DGDs :D.

redruby well done on the weight loss.

OL it sounds like you are caught in the middle between your OH and DS and that must be difficult.

Nelski sorry that your totally chilled day turned out quite busy. At least you managed to put your feet up.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Morning all

Wet and raining here again its meant to stop at 12 so fingers crossed it will as we had planned to take the pup out for a long walk this afternoon, its her Birthday today and she is 4 and such a funny little thing.

Thanks for the comments on the weight loss it is hard sometimes especially as OH is still eating normally but something had to be done as I was starting to feel uncomfortable and my joints were protesting loudly ! I want another stone off before our holiday in Sept which should be achievable as its still 14 weeks away.

Bedding is in the wm and we will have to TD it today, OH will remake the beds later and we have a few other jobs to do but nothing too strenuous !!

I have a bit of turkey out which I will do a roast with later, I am using that spray oil to cook with as it has much less calories.

Im thinking of my dad today he was a good kind man whom I miss every day, xx

    Have good days all xx

dp1, keep us posted on the baby please, what a worry for you all.

redruby, well done. Since Steve's been ill I've put on nearly a stone so i'm very cross with myself but I'm finding it difficult because he's been hugry a lot and eating goodies which I then "have" to share. He also can't eat salad at the moment (because of risk of infection) so we are eating more carbs than normal for this time of year.

We took Ziggy home yesterday and stayed to help Laura and Brian sort out a big raised bed in their garden. The soil was full of builders rubble, stones and other rubbish so we sieved it and mixed it with compost before putting it back. We didn't quite finish so hopefully Brian will finish it today.

I want to do some sewing today but hopefully a fairly lazy day and something simple with new potatoes, carrots and broccoli for dinner.

    Morning all.

The day started out bright and sunny though it's now clouded over a bit with rain promised. I need to get out for a walk and the rain can't put me off!

csarina - it's true what others are saying, looking after yourself is as important as looking after OH. I'm finding my caring role very difficult emotionally (mostly) and physically as I'm always on call. By nature I'm a solitary creature, really happy with my own company and find prolonged social interaction difficult. The twin aspects of watching my DM decline along with not having time to myself a real challenge. Of course, it's something which I also feel happy to do though that doesn't make it all any less challenging.

SO - you will feel washed out, as will AOD too. I hope that you can both get some rest and some peace.

    TA - brilliant granny!

dumpling - I shuddered at the mention of Lily coming home at 5am - took me right back to my youth.

Nelski - feet up is always good. At least you also got things done.

dp1 - my thoughts are with your family and am rooting for DG. She sounds like a real fighter.

HH - I hope you can make it outside. If I waited for the perfect weather I'd never go out. I remember being taught this during an English lesson:
    Whether the weather be fine,
Or whether the weather be not,
    Whether the weather be cold,
Or whether the weather be hot,
    We'll weather the weather
    Whatever the weather,
Whether we like it or not!

Right, need to clear away DM's breakfast tray and wash up - did I mention how much I hate washing dishes!

    Happy Sunday to all.
