Payable monthly in arrears?

Options
Hi,

I have been offered a new job within the private sector, but the contract states 'payable monthly in arrears'. What does this actually mean?

I currently get paid on the penultimate working day of the month, but I am a bit confused about how it could be paid in arrears.

Please can someone advise?
Thank you.

You work a month, then get paid for that month.

As above. You work in June and get paid at the end of June.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

    There is often confusion.

What you need to know(ask them) are

    Pay period.
    Pay day for pay period.

Typical arrears is the pay day is close to the end of the pay period.

Also get the timing deadlines for expenses, overtime and any other payments.

Also keep in mind if you miss the pay cut off you could be doing over a month before being paid.

As above is the typical way wages work, i.e. Work June and get paid for that month's work at the end of June.
Occasionally companies have other policies - at the moment I'm paid on 15th for the whole month i.e. part advance, part arrears.

There have been occasional posts on here from people paid for each month at the end of the following month and this was described as "monthly in arrears" Not a common practise but it does happen so definitely best to check.

In my current job I get paid on a Thursday for the work I did the previous Monday to Friday. (Starting to love weekly pay!)

I had a job once where I was paid monthly on the last working day but if you had done any overtime or were off sick in the last week of the month, then those adjustments wouldn't happen until the following month pay. It was all very complicated.

I started a job once where we were paid for the months work st the end of the following month.

Best to check and get clarification before you start to ensure you can budget accordingly.

That is normally known as a month in hand.

    In hand? Isn’t it arrears?

So for example, I worked all of June but didn’t get paid until the end of July.
