ive just hit 40, have loads of qualis, and in 2 yrs will have degree, just me and my now 14yr old daughter who will be a qualified hairdresser in 2 yrs.

As a started for ten, and possibly to obvious, I'd point you towards the Australian immigration service and the Australian High Commision
Worth a look through. I'd also say that things get tougher as you get older, unless you wait it out and go for a retirement visa?

How fast you get a visa (or not) also depends on the type of qualifications you've got. If youre qualified to do a job (e.g. Nursing) that Oz has a shortage of, things speed up. May help if you can find a job to go to when you apply.
