Working for Uber

Has anyone worked for Uber?
Full-time employment is going to be ending for me soon and I want to try something different. I quite like driving, I'm wondering if I could do a few hours a couple of days a week as an Uber driver.
Nothing late-night. I know it wouldn't pay well but it would get me out of the house (I'm single and live alone).
Anyone tried this?

Not worked for them but you would have to take out private hire insurance to be able to carry passengers and that won’t be cheap plus you’ll have to apply for a badge from your local council

Taxi drivers work nights for a reason to be frank. And it's only mediocre money then0 -

Thanks for your valuable contribution. I think this certainly gives the OP a lot to think on.
I really don't think it's something that should be done in half measures but for consideration;
a) Get some private hire insurance quotes
b) Find the typical costs an Uber driver charges for a particular route.
c) Take 25% off this (Uber Service Charge) and make a reasonable deduction for fuel.
You can then make an educated estimate on what you could make part time. The other issue in doing 'short shifts' is if you're driving out to a busy area and driving back, you're wasting money going home. People working long shifts at night would instead idle near busy spots to reduce their 'extra' mileage.Know what you don't0 -

Nope, but despite the bad press I have never spoken to an Uber driver that wasn't content with the arrangement. You may need to do more than a few hours though as you will need to at least cover your standing costs.0 -
I knew a private hire driver that cleared nearly £200 a night on Friday and Saturdays so there is money to be made. Obviously that was before fuel, insurance and running costs.
Week days it's just all £3 shopper specials from the supermarket and the odd person late for work.0 -

... and also take off the significant charges by the taxi firm. Usually £100-£150 a week.
Then take off the fuel, insurance costs, running costs, etc and whatevers left divide that across two long night shifts dealing with drunk and potentially abusive passengers and you're probably not getting a whole pile more than minimum wage if you're doing it part time.0 -

I already said running costs in my original post...0 -

You did yes, but that was not my point.
I was making the point that the taxi company's fee has to be taken off - which could be £100+ per week (or in Ubers case 25% which = £100 anyway)
THEN take off the running costs you mention.
So whilst it might sound like a decent amount, if only doing it PT you could be left with less than half that which could amount to a minimum wage job.0 -

Well it depends how long the night is. He used to only do from about 6pm to 1am ish on the Fri and Sat nights. Probably would take more if he worked longer into the night. Not sure what the PH firm took.0
