I'm sure this question has been asked before, but cannot remember the answer.

Copyright usually means that the written word or visual image cannot be reproduced/downloaded unless with permission of the copyright holder.

If you can turn the idea into a patent then yes. The trouble is most ideas are unoriginal.

you cannot patent a brain fart.. you have to write it down, turn it into a design, drawing, art, tangible etc. Depending on what it is one of the following will apply: patent, design right, copyright, trademark. Copyright is automatically generated on anything original which is written or "exists". That could be something scrawled on the back of a lottery ticket. If its verbal that is not protected by copyright.
Theres tonnes of places out there on the web which describe copyright.

Patenting is something different of which I am less familiar.

Yes, you can patent a process, but it has to meet all the rules for patentable ideas.
