Reccomendations for a reliable high quality combi microwave?

Options
Our old Hitachi MCB-30 combi-microwave is about due for replacement, it was very expensive when new but it has been used every day and has lasted for more than 15 years. Well done Hitachi.

Trying to find a replacement isn't as easy as I expected. One of the first things I read was that these days you don't need to spend more than about £250 on a combi microwave unless you want fancy extra gizmos, so I thought great, the technology has moved on and I'm sure I'll have no problem finding something decent... Nope.

Darn. I spelled "recommendations" wrong.

Looking at the three top-rated combi-microwaves on Amazon over £200, they are all Panasonic and skipping past the uninformative 5-star reviews down to the 1-star and 2-star reviews, they have a catalogue of faults and weaknesses. According to a reply one person got from Panasonic, their combi microwaves cannot be used to make popcorn! That does not sound like a good microwave to me, in fact it sounds a bit rubbish.

I'm looking for something around 30litre capacity (big but not huge) and probably in the 900w power category. Price-wise I don't mind paying up to £500 if I have to, but I really only need something basic because I have never used any of the settings on my old microwave. Any suggestions please?

  • I have this one bought from JL Jan 2016; it's been brilliant (so far). It also has a bread proving function which works brilliantly. I make pizza dough in a breadmaker then stick the dough in this microwave on the dough prover setting and end up with the dough about 3-4 times it's original size.

I've got an integrated Siemans combi microwave, which I'm very pleased with. What I really like about it is the fact that I can use metal dishes, containers etc. on the microwave setting, something that I wasn't able to do with any of my other combi microwave ovens. There is no rotating plate either, so opertation on any setting is static, which again is something I've never known before.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
