If you sign on unemployed you will get NI credits even if you are not entitled to money. But you have to do the same as everyone else and prove each week or fortnight that you are looking for work.
I should add that that is what I have been told. I do not have inside information.0 -
Hi, another NI related question please, I'm unemployed, looking for work but unable to claim JSA.
Why are you 'unable to claim JSA' ?
If you have sufficent NI credits for tax years 2016-17 and 2017-18 you should be entitled to six months 'new style' (contributions based) JSA regardless of any savings you have and this will ensure you are given NI credits.
If you don't qualify for new-style JSA, then I think now you;d have to apply for Universal Credit, which is means tested - I'm not sure if you would be allowed to claim just the NI credits if your savings exceed the limit as you used to be able to with income-based JSA.0
