@jackieblack - Love the quote in your signature. I just had to comment/wave at a fellow member of the “Church of Wittertainment”. Those two have kept me entertained for hours on long journeys - I bless the Friday that I first heard them (in 2008), while driving back from working on Humberside to London. Now, in Lockdown, we download the podcast and sit together to listen.
- Pip. (Hello to Jason Isaacs.)
I got the quote from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - Sonny Kapoor says “In India, we have a saying – everything will be all right in the end. So if it is not all right, it is not yet the end.” I have also read that John Lennon said it too 🤷🏻♀️I use it quite often when I, or someone I know, is going through a rough patch. I find it helps me.
Cheers

I get most of my eco-stuff from this little store, it's a family from Yorkshire and love their ethos, no plastic at all and everything ethically sourced, plus their prices are really honest: www.earthbits.com I recently got their kitchen ecofriendly brushes together with a washing up natural soap and it's so great to have zero plastic around my kitchen sink!5

Startled to discover that despite the pandemic, we still have a zero waste shop open! Planet B is a smashing corner, and even if only one person is allowed in at once, you feel safe & surrounded by good things.
As a birthday treat, I am getting an Anglepoise lamp (& the bits to refurbish it) - I should end up with a lamp that retails for £199 for under £70, with bonus bragging rights!2 -
I do not really want to push sales Amazon’s way but the stainless steel parker jotter biro (refillable & hard to damage - I’ve been abusing 2 recently) is in the Black Friday sale. Whether it’s the only step, or an eco friendly stocking filler - it’s at an affordable & easily available state.3

In case anyone was wanting to find a New Years Resolution they can meet without too much hassle, here are a few possibilities. (No prizes, just being able to look your children & grandchildren in the eye. How can I lecture them on their bedroom floor if I am routinely littering their planet?!)Carry a reusable bottleSay no to plastic strawsTake a reusable coffee cupAvoid excessive food packagingUse refill stations for detergentsSay no to disposable cutlery (carry your own - but be prepared for eco conversations with security)Get your milk delivered (I know, not for everyone, but Greenpeace & WWF both advocate it)Avoid microbeadsCarry a shopping bagGive up gum.Buy boxes instead of bottles.Purchase food, like cereal, pasta, and rice from bulk bins and fill a reusable bag or container.Use loose leaf tea with a tea strainer (as some teabags are plasticised)If you must use glitter, use eco-friendly, biodegradable glitterDitch the cling wrap (you can make your own waxed cloth with cotton cloth & wax)Become a wine bottle sommelier - choose wine bottles with natural cork stoppersCarry your own containers for for take-out food and leftovers.Treat yourself to an ice cream cone (rather than buy the plastic containers, plus inbuilt portion control [soem greens can be body fascists])Bring your own container for meat and prepared foods.Buy fresh bread that comes in either paper bags or no bags.Buy large wheels of unwrapped cheese. (Eco may also be MS but upfront affordability may be an ulp issue)Clean with vinegar and water. (YMMV)Baking soda is a fantastic scouring powder.Use powdered dishwasher detergent in a cardboard box.Hand wash dishes without plastic.Use natural cleaning cloths and scrubbers instead of plastic scrubbers and synthetic sponges.Wash clothes with homemade laundry soap and stain removers.Use natural rubber gloves.Check labels of personal care products! No polyethylene pleaseSwitch to bar soap instead of liquid soap.Give up shampoo in plastic bottles.Choose lotions and lip balms in plastic-free containers.Switch from a plastic razor to a second-hand safety razor.Reconsider how you clean your teeth.Choose toilet paper that’s not wrapped in plastic.Use plastic-free feminine hygiene products.Look into plastic-free sunscreen options.Explore plastic-free hair accessories and tools.Keep your own reusable foodware at the office.Carry lunches in reusable stainless containers or cloth bags.Learn to preserve foods without plastic.Avoid non-stick cookware.Choose stainless steel ice cube trays and Popsicle molds.Acquire necessary plastic items used instead of new.Repair things when they break.Avoid disposable plastic pens.Choose natural cat litter.Choose pet toys and furniture made from natural materials instead of plastic.6

Saw an article on being more sustainable & nabbed the headlines:Use beeswax wrap instead of clingfilmUse a wooden chopping boardInvest in eco-friendly washing up liquidUse recycled or eco-friendly loo and kitchen rollSwitch to a coconut sponge or scourerDo bigger loads of laundry more oftenMake tweaks to how you heat your homeUse refillable tubs and bottlesBuy bars instead of liquids (for your soaps and shampoos)Use LED lightbulbsUse wool dryer ballsAir dry your laundry if you canMake sure you're composting food wastePick up reusable cotton padsMake sure your appliances have energy star ratingsUse refillable containers (and shops)Re-use your shopping bags (and even get totes)Freeze food that might go to wasteUse your electric blanket for warmthOpen a window to cool downAdd a recycling bin to your bathroomDon't leave your appliances on standbyThink about your bed linen compositionTry to grow some of your own foodTake travel cups with youPrep ahead and use lunch boxesMake your mattress naturalTest out making your own cleaning productsBuy cleaning concentrates to save on packagingMake your cooking utensils all wooden
I have some 'absolutely agree, & indeed already do', some 'does not apply I have sons' & one 'Wow will implement' (a recycling bin in the bathroom - yes whyever not, unless its a repurposed phone box). Plus quite a few you're thinking of America and No Rain, aren't you?
What do you reckon?3 -
I have a great potato patch growing I got £3 worth seed spuds reduced from B&Q just after Easter 16 spuds and they have all come up so will be harvesting them later this month with luck should have around 2 months of potatoes.
Four tomato plants are absolutely loaded down with some real good sized tomatoes what I don't use fresh will be turned unto pasta sauce and frozen for use in the winter
I also have a very healthy pepper plant with a good crop growing on at the moment.
I use white vinegar for cleaning and washing soda, and even my left over denture tablet water gets chucked down the loo and left
I am soo into recycling almost anything I can ,but then I was born in the 1940s when there were so many shortages of almost everything, my late Mum recycled everything she could as a necessity because there was nothing to replace things with, sheets were turned sided to middle, any cloth that was left over from almost anything was reused until it virtually fell apart. We had a pillow case on the back of the kitchen door which was the rag bag for cleaning rags and polishing cloths
I still have four very soft cloths left over from the days of cloth nappies, that I use as polishing cloths as they are white they can be boiled or washed without being separate as normally the yellow ones are. By the way the original users are now 54 & 56bread bags are reused for rubbish bags or my DD has even used them when walking her two dogs as poo bags.
Its zero waste as much as possible, every scrap of food is used, frozen if necessary. There is only a finite amount of resources to be had on the planet and if we don't look after them life will become very hard. I don't buy food to throw it in the bin You may as well just empty your purse into the bin. Not being miserly just using everything as much as possible and keeping stuff out of landfill
