Hello,

I am looking for some advice and wondered if anyone is able to help.

I work full time but have a second job on the side where I am self employed. I earned about £3000 in the year April 2018 - April 2019 so I had to register for self assessment and I am in the process of completing a tax return.
I haven’t got any advice about doing this other than what I have read on various websites - should I get the advice of an accountant?
I haven’t done so yet because I didn’t think it would be worth it for this amount.
I also intend to claim for some allowable expenses, but I want to get this right so not sure whether to seek proper advice about it.
The expenses have seemed pretty straightforward from what I have read (the self employed job is as a gym instructor) - I’m told I can claim for clothing that has been branded with the company logo, my liability insurance and part of my phone bill. Does this sound right?
Thanks for any advice

Have you read up on the traders allowance?

It may be more beneficial than claiming actual expenses.

Completing the rest of the form should be fairly straightforward providing you remember that it's for you to declare all of your taxable income, even if tax has been deducted during the year i.e. your full time job.

Yes I came across the trading allowance by chance; although from what I understand of this I can choose between either using the £1000 trading allowance and paying tax on the remaining £2000, or not using the trading allowance and being able to claim expenses on the £3000?
  • Do the things you want to claim for come to more than £1,000?

if you want a reliable answer you will need to give more details
    - nature of the clothing? whose company? what do you understand by the
    word "uniform" ?

    - insurance policy dates? are you claiming on the cash basis or the accruals basis ?

    - what "part" of the phone?

Clothing is uniform - t shirts and hoodies with the club logo on,
The company belongs to someone else who employs me to teach their classes, I have no involvement with the business I just turn up and take the class.
I selected the cash basis as this seemed the most relevant - I am paid on a weekly basis.
Still unsure on the phone. I have read I would need to claim only the percentage used for the self employed job? I need to use a joint phone calendar for the classes, and the majority of my communication is with the owner of the club, would this mean I can claim for the majority of the bill?
The insurance is yearly starting around the end of March.
Do the things you want to claim for come to more than £1,000?
Not too sure yet, the part I’m mainly unsure of is the percentage of my phone bill.
