Does home IPL hair removal work?

Posting for a male relative -

"I’ve had a beard for most of my adult life because of problems like ingrowing hairs, razor burn and my hair just growing too fast to keep on top of it so I stopped. I’ve recently started shaving again and although my skin isn’t as sensitive as it was I still run up against the same problems.

I started looking into laser hair removal and found that for the price of a couple of sessions at a salon doing one small patch I could buy an At Home IPL (intense pulsed light) hair removal system that would allow me to use it as much as I want and anywhere.

I’ve looked at a bunch of different at home systems and they all look promising but it's so hard to make a decision as they range in price from little over one hundred pounds to several thousand pounds yet all claim to do the same thing. I’ve looked for reviews but I don’t know enough in this area to know which sites can be trusted not to be glorified adverts. On sites like amazon they have tons of rave customer reviews but looking through them they seem a little suspicious, like many of them may have been paid for.

So I’m interested to hear from people who have actually used any of these products, which ones and how well they worked in practice. Most of all if they work on male facial hair, as I could find virtually no info on that. My hair is coarse, dark coloured and densely packed especially around my goatee area, and I have medium to light skin tone. Even just a reduction in the thickness and vigour of the hair growth would make it a lot easier to get a clean shave."

Can anyone help?

I found useful reviews on Mumsnet for the Lidl IPL device when I was looking. I have no idea whether it would work for a man but maybe he will find reviews there?

These devices are aimed at women, I doubt they will work on beard grown on a man. They will do back hair etc though.

Beard hair is thicker than hair from the rest of the body, chest, back, think of it in terms of hair on your head.

Salons use a much stronger device which I think they might need a licence and training to us.
