Do I buy new sofas?

Hi, Ive had my sofas for about 10 years and they were given to me by my sister in law who had them a couple of years before giving them to me, so they are pretty old and a bit grubby, I put throws over them. They are as still solid as the day I first got them but I think they have a sort of grubby smell, if you know what I mean.
We havent got lots of spare cash and want to decorate our whole flat and invest in some space saving furniture(there are 4 of us in a 2 bed flat) so new funiture would be an unwanted expense.
My ex hubby has offered us his leather sofa which is okay, clean but not a nice colour.
Sorry, rambling here, do I ...get my existing furniture professionally cleaned?
Take sofa from kind ex and his wife and make do untill decorating is complete? or throw caution to the wind and buy a lovely new corner unit from Ikea?

Wonder whether you could compromise if there are any good second hand stores near you. It is possible that you might find something that you really like but is not so much as a new suite. Also worth a look on freecycle and give away the leather in the colour YOU don't like and obtain something that you really love?0

Some options for you to think about.
1. Fabreze on current sofas, then re-cover them if you want to. I successfully re-covered a 3 piece suite by just cutting cardboard cutouts for patterns and then stitching the new fabric to the old. Looked like a brand new suite!
2. Accept leather sofa and dye it.
3. Admit to yourself that what you really want is a new sofa, and enjoy it.
I am not recommending any of the above, just hoping that finding new ways of looking at things might be helpful! Good luck with whatever you decide.

I've been amazed at the low prices for some sofas and suites on Ebay. If you limit your search to 10 or 25 miles from your postcode, you can view before you bid and then hire a man-with-a-van fairly cheaply to collect. Longer distances cost more, but I have been quoted around £80-£120 for delivery of 2 large sofas from 120 miles away."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0

Hire a rug doctor from your local B&Q or wherever hires them out- will cost about £30 for a day with the cleaning solution-remember to take along 2 sets of ID, or you can't hire it, and to get the upholstery pack which stops it overfoaming on your sofas.
My sofas are nearly 10 too, were expensive when new and still aren't worn in any way, but they have been cleaned a couple of times with a Rug Doctor, and they came up like new.:D
HTH, and sounds nicer than a hand-medown from an ex. Unless you think there's loads of change down the back of it.:rotfl:Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Thanks everyone. I have decided to keep my old sofas for the time being and hire the cleaner from B&Q. They really are nice and sturdy and comfy so untill I can afford to replace them with something that I like as much Im going to be sensible and make do.0
