I applied for.a job thats going to do an accurate background check via a 3rd party company.. (Employment & criminal.)

If one of the companies i previously worked for (around 8 years ago) went out of business a few years ago, can they still verify that i worked there? If so, then how? Curious as to how they would see this.

  • I would imagine that if the employer requires the third party to go back a certain amount of time and that employer you worked for falls within that period they would seek a reference to check factually this is correct, however if the employer no longer exists than I suppose a reference would not be returned, so you would need to ask your new employer or third party company how they handle this.

I don't know if they can access HMRC records and whether or not those would show any employment information.

No they can't. This was a recent solution I put to a background screening company for a major household name doing a background screen for references they couldn't get in under last 5 years - they avoided answering the surely you get access my tax record but continued to ask for information, which makes me very suspicious about these types of companies.

In the end, furious to prove, I supplied copy of offer letter, along with payslips from two linked courier firms where one just didn't answer, and one as the head office said they had no record of my employment in late 2017 apparently. (Not all bad, I certainly know which delivery firm I'll be avoiding and who won't be coming near my door so everyone lost)

@OP It causes delays to the job start date but often there are ways round it. I only got told no references as I passed stage 1 with a delay into starting work and I'm sure not getting refs promptly, largely had something to do with it.

I don't have no wage slips, p60s or p45s from that long ago. I have no way to prove it then.. I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it I suppose. Annoyin me already lol

I think normally they will just go back for up to 5 years... unless you are applying for the government? I went through a supposedly rigorous referencing process with a company and one of my previous emploment was abroad. I gave details of my referee, the company etc. and anxiously wait for them to contact. 3 months later my referee received no letter , and I started the new job as normal. Perhaps they gave up because the foreign company didn't speak English.
