Beer (Real Ale) hamper /get set ideas

was just wondering if anybody had any tip or ideas for this.
I was thinking about doing a Real ale gift set for my dad for Christmas. I was thinking getting some bottles of bitter and some branded glasses. Anybody know where I can get some branded beer glasses E.G IPA, Spitfire and where I can get some cheap bottles of bitter. Anything else I can put in it.

There's one of the Wychwood brands (Hobgoblin I think, but might be wrong) in Sainsburys' christmas range - a glass and a bottle in a tube.

You'll probably find a few sets like that in various shops - if you can find them on a 3 for 2 offer or similar, it would work out cheaper than buying all the separate bits (especially if postage is involved).

Have you looked up your local CAMRA group? They often have beer festivals around this time of year - sometimes good for freebies and promo stuff too (or you could buy your Dad a ticket for the first one of next year).

There is a card and gift range called 'Harbottle' (hamsters and the such - a bit like Country Companions in appearance) that is worth looking for. They do some along the theme of 'Rather Peculiar' (as in the beer Old Peculiar) - I've had cards, pint glasses and allsorts for my Dad over the years, although it does seem harder to find now.

  • Hi

I am making one of these for my Dad. My hubby is REEEEAAAAALLLLYY into his real ales, beer festivals and collects pint glasses so I have lots of tips!

I am making a xmas ales one. I have a christmas ale for m & s, Otter Claus, Rosey Nosey, Good Elf, Winter Ale. These are all bottled beers.

There are loads of xmassy beers around in local supermarkets, shops etc.

As for glasses, why not ask your local pubs if you can buy/pay for a glass. Often - they will give them to you.

Let me know if you want any more info. Will post a pic when I am finished.

  • makro do cheap gift packs, today i got spitfire glass and two bottles for £3.49. I know they also have ipa and bishops fingers in a gift pack too :D
  • Asda also have some gift sets with a glass and a bottle in it.

Also check the sale shelves in the supermarkets as I picked up a "Pumpkin Ale" and a Rugby beer left over from the world cup, both discounted.

Netto have a "Yard of Ale" glass in todays offers.
  • I did these a few years ago for my dad and brother - went down a treat.
Depending on your budget, how about including the good beer guide 2008 or good pub guide (£8.99 from Amazon), a book about pub walks in your area, or even membership to CAMRA? A cheaper option is some nibbles to go with the beer!
If you have a local brewery, they usually do free (or cheap) tours with tastings at the end. Why not offer to be taxi driver so the beer fan can taste all they like without worrying about driving home.

Debenhams have an offer on too a bottle of Speckled Hen with glass in a metal tin cost about £8.

How about getting a musical bottle opener too - you can get them in pound shops usually.

How about a book of pub walks - these are sometimes short walks that end at a pub (it will give tips on ambience, best food etc).

Hall & Woodhouse (sell beer in Tesco) it is real ale - Tanglefoot, Fursty Ferret, Golden Champion, Blandford Fly (this one is a bit icky as it contains ginger), Badger Best Bitter (all the beers mentioned are bitters).

http://www.hall-woodhouse.co.uk - you can get some nice glasses from them with Badgers on them. They are an independent family brewery in Blandford Forum in Dorset. They also do free tours around the brewery.
