Second Job and tax

I am mainly supported by my partner but working 2 days a week or around 14-15 hours (looking after little children, even your own, can be quite depressing so I decided to go back to work part time)
I am offered a job just 1 day a week witch I will really enjoy doing but it makes it a bit pointless if I have to pay 20%tax and pay for child care as well.
My income will not be more than the 9-10k a year.
I am just wondering if to get this second job...

  • You will have to pay tax on your first payment (or two) but HMRC should automatically review your tax code(s) when you are paid for the first time by the new employer and if you have some spare Personal Allowance this will be used in a tax code for the second/new job.

Once a new tax is sorted your new employer would refund any excess tax deducted in your next payment.

For example if you haven't applied for Marriage Allowance and earn say £8,500 (taxable salary) in your existing job your tax codes would be

Existing job 850L (tax payable if your annualised pay exceeds £8,509 on any pay day with this employer)

New job 400T (tax payable if your annualised pay exceeds £4,009 on any pay day with this employer)

the second job would take you over 16 hours per week so may enable you to claim working tax credit as a boost to your wages anyway?

Hasn't working tax credit now largely been replaced by Universal Credit - for new claims at least ?
