Digital Camera for 8-year-old

Hi all. I would like to buy a digital camera for my daughter for Christmas. It needs to be of reasonable quality, and easy to use. Doesn't need too many functions, just point and shoot would be fine. Happy to pay up to about £100 including delivery charges. Any advice would be appreciated.

i have a casio myself and i would highly reccomend them

but Play have a good deal on at the min for a Lumix. This is the camera i wanted, but I was in the states and got mine at a very could price

it was £10 less when i bought it on Friday for my parents for christmas

but look in the codes section of this web site and you will get a further £5 or 5% off (cant remember which)

100 is quite a bit for a 8 year old for essentially a toy (not that im telling you what do to!)

but supermarkets are a good bed
  • Thank you so much, both good options. You're right, Jersy, £100 is a lot, but she is into photography and I would rather spend a bit more and get something which will last a good while, rather than spending the money on bits and bobs of rubbish which lives at the back of the cupboard !

If she is into photography and you want somthing to last a while then I would look towards a camera that she will be able to grow in to. somthing that has automatic modes for now but will also allow her to make changes to settings such as appature and shutter speed so she can experiment with depth of field and longer exposures. macro shots are always good fun to play with. unfortunalty these features dont usually come cheap. and your proberbly looking to need to spend closer to £150 to get somthing.

I always advise to buy a camera from a company that has always made cameras, not calculators. canon, nikon, olympus, fuji etc.

The canon A710 has image stabliesing on it and all the features I mention but it is £149 from Jessops a little searching should find it for less.
The canon A570 also has the features. and can be bought just over budget
    the A540 same again
  • Hi there,

I was recently looking for a camera for our eldests birthday and ended up going for this... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-A460-Digital-Camera/dp/B000MS08MU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1195462917&sr=1-1

It is waiting to be opened on Saturday! So I can't tell you 1st hand how it fairs - I read a few reviews on other sites and they seemed to think that the only problem was the time elapse between pushing the button and the photo being captured - which sounded to be as long as my camera - that cost a few times more than this one! So I discounted that as being an issue...

The only thing is that there is no mains charger - so I bought a battery recharger so that there is always a set to hand.

Although I wanted to get her a pink one so my choices were a bit limited :o :rotfl:

My two (8 and 10 years old) have got Fuji cameras that cost around £50. I forget the model numbers.

They're quite strong and withstand a bit of heavy handling as little ones are not always as careful as we'd like them to be! They're easy to use as a "point and shoot" camera or they have some settings if your child wants to learn how to manually set up a camera.

I would second the comments about not paying a lot for a camera at this age. I would let her have it as a plaything first, so she can experiment snapping different things.
Here I go again on my own....

CurlyWurly have a look at the Canon Outlet on ebay. They sell refurbished cameras direct form the manufacturer and with a full manufacturers warranty. They currently have 24 Powershot cameras on there of varying types. They have the basic A420 complete with a photo printer which seem to be about £35 at the moment all the way up to the A710is which is a very nice image stabilised 6x zoom compact with lots of manual controls at around £85. They seem to sell for around £165 brand new so it's a good price if you can get one for that price, it maybe a bit advanced for an 8 year old though.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
