I don't seem to have got the hang of quoting on here, but comms, is this a new thing (unions not helping after an issue has begun)? About 5 years ago, I had a chat from a union rep, and one of the selling points he gave me (us) was they could help if issues are already on going.

No, it's not a "new thing" - joining a union and expecting help for an existing issue is like taking out car insurance after an accident and thinking you're going to get a pay out.

Yes Elvis, the comparison has already been made, but thanks for making it again.

So, why ask the question if it had already been answered?
  • I used to work for an employer like this. He didn't care about his employees, some are self-employed contractors who normally work during the day and he will actually offer them more money to work overnight just to keep clients happy. I tried doing overtime, they didn't want me to set a precedent giving clients the impression we work those hours. It was a 9-5.30pm job, I often started at 8am, skipped my 1hr lunch, and stayed until after 7pm up until the director expressed the above to me.

I was made to feel like I wasn't working fast enough, any overtime is unpaid and done because I'm slow, and eventually they simply made up a reason to get rid of me.

In a much better job now, pays more, and management are supportive and whilst overtime is not paid I have received pay rises during appraisals.
