PRA Group & Welcome Finance

Hi, not sure if this is the correct place but I would like some advice, please.
I have received a call today from the PRA Group regarding a Welcome finance loan that I took out in 2007. They state I owe them nearly £6000. Around 2009 I received a bit of inheritance money and am convinced I settled the debt with WF.
PRA first contacted me in 2017 chasing the debt. I told them the above and have not heard from them until now. I am in the process of clearing up my credit file in preparation for a mortgage application and I am terrified this is going to appear on my file.
I cannot prove I paid the debt, I changed banks many years ago.. I have asked them to prove that I owe the money and only to communicate through email.
If I cannot show proof I paid it what can they do?
Thanks in advance.

Okay, I assume you sent the standard 'prove it' letter - so all you do now is wait. The onus is on PRA to provide evidence of the money they claim is owed, not for you to prove you paid it.
So I'd sit back and wait to see what happens next and depending on the outcome, you can come back on here for advice.0 -
Hi. I have not sent any letter, just said "prove it" over the phone. Should I also send a letter to them?0

And don't worry about an account suddenly appearing on your credit file after all these years. It would have already have been on your file a few years ago, only to have been automatically removed in accordance with regulations.

Yes, it needs to be in writing and to be sent via Royal Mail (not by email)Confused1978 wrote: »Hi. I have not sent any letter, just said "prove it" over the phone. Should I also send a letter to them?I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Thanks both. Appreciate the responses.
I guess I'll have to wait another two years for them to reply like last time lol0 -
Hi,
I have had a similar issue where PRA have written to me about balance of an old Welcome Finance loan and annoyingly looks as though I am about 6 months off the 6 year cutoff. I have asked them to ‘prove it’ and will back it up with the letter. Hopefully with welcome going bust they aren’t able to get the paperwork tomorrow. If they are able to get any paperwork does anyone have any advice on my options?
Thanks in advance.0
