I find my local ticket office (the main station in a UK city) very helpful for this.
I do wish you could reserve a bike space when you buy a ticket online though. I have to travel to the station to buy the ticket as it's the best way to check if there's a bike space.
My journeys are all one-way, because usually I'm getting the train home after cycling somewhere.0
