Not quite sure how I missed this - wife does not work but I believe that if i open and contribute to SIPP on her behalf the provider will claim back the 20% relief at source?
Are contributions and therefore the relief able to be claimed for prior years?

That is correct, see the "Pay £2,880 into a pension" thread for details but the short version is, pay £2,880 into a pension and it will be bumped up to £3,600. Must be under age 75.
You cannot retrospectively claim previous years.0 -
