Has anyone learnt to cut their own hair so that it looks nice?

I've been thinking about trying to cut my own hair for a while. It's long and wavy and therefore pretty forgiving. Does anyone have a particular resource/method that works for them? So far I've only been brave enough to snip at the (many) split ends but not to do anything resembling a "cut". I suspect youtube is probably the place to go.

Why cut long hair, other than to trim split ends?

Spend the time & energy on hair toys, up-dos & ways of making it look like you've had a cut but in fact you still have the whole healthy length to play with?

Says a devout longhair who hasn't been inside a hairdresser in years & intends to keep it that way.

I lop 4/6 inches off every few months. I brush forward and put it in a pony tail, twiddle it around then cut the end off. If I want another layer I repeat further back, careful not to cut too short at the front. Then I brush it all back and make sure both sides are equal length.

I call it the unicorn method :rotfl: its what I use. As much as I am sure hair dressers are a lovely bunch. I can't stand sitting in the chain with inane chat.

I have just taken about 6 inches off using the brush it forwards into a pony tail and cut in a strait line method. I haven't had it cut in 2 years and it feels so much better. The grey is less noticeable now the coloured ends have gone!! I admit I did have to have a couple of glasses of wine as I had not cut my own hair in over 5 years but I feel better and hubby is happy its not too short.
