Re state Pension..proof of missing NI credit

hi all
i've just looked at my NI history on the .gov website and got a shock.
loads of gaps in my record, some my own fault because i was a young freelancer and didn't realise it wasn't part of my tax return.
but..
I've got a gap in 1985-6 when i know i was doing a degree at cardiff uni 84-88, and the other years 84 86 87 etc are present.
am i correct in thinking that in those years (80's) if you were in full time ed' you automatically got a credit??.
