I'd love to write teaching materials for primary schools... colleagues who use my stuff keep telling me I should get published... trouble is where to start?

A neighbour of mine has written a teaching aid in Gaelic. She had the idea, wrote the book and searched for an appropriate publisher. I am not sure how much demand there could have been for it, but, she got it published easily enough.I'd love to write teaching materials for primary schools...
I am very wary of these "vanity publishers" who charge for getting books into print though. Having said that, A.W. Wainwright paid for his first book to be printed.
