I don't entirely get the total loathing of Tesco, but then I live in rural Aberdeenshire where I don't have the luxury of vast choice of shops - my nearest town has a Tesco Express and a big(ish) Coop, so those are my most frequented outlets.

Yes, Tesco can be more expensive than other shops but it still has decent offers on most of the time if you look for them, though I guess it depends on whether you are prepared to go to more than one shop for your groceries.

If I'm off to the dentist, in a town 13 miles in the other direction, then I go to the Lidl there because it's cheaper, but most of the time it's not worth the fuel just to go shopping as there's only the two of us and it would cost more than it saves.

But back on topic, Tesco would be missing an experimental trick if they didn't somehow let customers know where they could save their money before they get to the till. Most folk don't look twice at their receipt so they wouldn't even notice the discount as part of a trolley full.

Clearly they won't be losing money overall on these offers, even for the savvy ones who only buy those things in Tesco and get the rest of their shopping elsewhere, so why not put the dual prices on the shelf edge? If part of the aim is to get more people to sign up to the Clubcard then surely they need to tempt new customers with something?

One of my sisters won't have a loyalty card of any description because "I don't want them knowing my shopping habits". I say I don't care if they know I buy dark chocolate, I've had several vouchers for £100 off cottage holidays, plus lots of other things in return so I'm happy. I'd be happier if they were consistently a bit cheaper, but really only because I'm limited by where I happen to live.
