Bought an oat loaf of bread from Tescos the other day. First time I have ever bought bread made from oats and to my horror, the whole thing has turned into crumbs...not a complete slice left except for the crust at the end!
Can't really afford to give it to the birds and suddenly remembered my Mums gorgeous bread pud'n from when we were kids. Sadly, she is no longer with us and I don't have the recipe, so do any of you good old style savers out there have a really nice recipe?? one that'll work with oat based bread???
Thanks in advance...:D

Hello.
I've not tried either of these (but will soon, they look delicious!):

Sorry they've just been pulled from google but I'm afraid I'd never even heard of bread pudding before your post.

If it's oat bread you could make porridge with it!
Alternatively put it in the freezer as crumbs and use to make meatballs, meatloaf or as a crumb coating for fish, chicken, crumble topping, shepherds pie topping etc in the future!0 -
My late mother used to make what she called Apple Charlotte, which is what I think I would do with your crumbs.
Don't know what weight of crumbs you have so will go the non weigh route:
Mix 1oz sugar to every 4 of crumbs, little nutmeg or cinnamon, 1oz chopped butter or margarine, layer with stewed apple or any fruit you have, crumb mixture for top layer, then top with little of whichever spice you have used and dot with pats of butter or margarine, bake in moderate over ( around 175c) for about 30 minutes. Serve with hot custard. Excuse me while I peel some apples....

Ooooooo that sounds good! As the chief cook and bottle washer in the house for 9 mouths (including mine) I was surprised to hear that so few people have a hot puddin' more than once a year - we have at least 2 a week (as your Charlotte but with sponge is a fav) and a great way to use up fruit that is either over ripe (plums) or never gonna get ripe (supermarket pears and peaches for example).
As an aside - I have been making my Xmas cake today and it smelt so good that I had to make another one 'cos the first had to have "Quality Assurance Assessment" - good job I always seem to have too much!0 -
I had the same problem with the oat bread from Tesco, all the crusts broke off. I mad breadcrumbs with half of it and took the rest it back for a refund. It was a shame, but maybe it's a common problem.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0

Just a quick thanks for all who replied...! Sorry it took so long...been having computer problems
The Delia recipe looks similar to my Mum's so I'll give that one a go...I especially like the addition of some alcohol! Sure my Mums bread pud'n didn't have that in it!! lol0
