I done the same. Worry not. Just it might be an awkward email or call, but everyone is “just a number” in most professions.

I knew within 3 days of starting my previous job I’d made a mistake and that I wanted out. Somehow lasted 4 weeks but resigned and moved on with my life

So you've been there a whole 3 days and that's enabled you to evaluate the culture - really? First impressions aren't always accurate.

Try having an adult conversation with your new employer before you wimp out. If they still won't honour their interview promises, at least then you know where you stand and know you've tried.

What would the employer think if the employee lied in an interview?

I've just been in the same boat. I handed in my notice yesterday. After all you *have* to do what is best for you. I think that too many people get stuck in a job because they feel like they have to. You don't. Tell them the job is not what you thought and that it makes you unhappy. You spend a lot of time at work. You need to do what is best for you. Just apologise and do it sooner rather than later

I am never too impressed by any employer who tells a leaving employee that they are welcome back at any time or that they will hold their job open for them if they want to come back. To me it shows disrespect for the recruitment process and for other employers. Employers who show disrespect to others, whether they be customers, competitors, or suppliers are rarely good employers to work for in the long term.

I would look around for another job in a few months time and say good bye to both these employers if things do not work out after trying hard to make a go of it in your new job.

    2. I was told I would be working and leading a team in x department, which is why I joined. They told me on day 1 that someone else would lead team x and I would lead team y. Team x is a move forward and team y is a significant step backward.

    4. They told me I could work flexibly (once settled) - now that I will lead a different different that flexibility has been reduced.

These are very good reasons for resigning.

It sounds like the role is quite different to what you were promised. It is absolutely your right to decide that you don't want the different role.

If you know you are not going to be happy in this role, then I should you should find another role ASAP - whether that be with your old employer or whether that be with someone else.

There is no point staying long term in a role you aren't happy with.

Are you serious? You consider leaving on friendly terms to be disrespectful to other employers? How does that logic work?

Employers do sometimes lie about things at interview.
For my current job, i was told the company was long established with a good order book. What they failed to tell me was that they were subject to a CVA and had been bailed out to the tune of £2m. Neither did they mention that there was no money for new tooling for their machines.

Still working for them, but going to leave as soon as a new, more stable job comes my way.

I spoke to my former departmental manager (line manager's manager) and agreed that under the same conditions I'd probably want out again but he said he can convince HR and his line management to allow me 1 day from home and 2 days of flexible hours. If this is the case then I'll be rejoining and staying for good. I'm not sure why it's taken for me to leave for them to do this. He said internal processes could take a few days and so if all goes to plan I'll get an offer within 1-2 weeks looking to potentially start immediately afterwards.

In terms of my new job I have learnt so much that I didn't know at the time of the interview. It's not the worst place in the world but they basically want me to put out a full blown forest fire with a water pistol. What they told me was I'd have a fleet of the latest fire trucks.

Before you start you want to see the trucks outside fully manned.
Companies that can only promise resources and not show you them before you start chances are they will never appear.

I suspect they never intended to give you the job they said they would they just needed to get someone on board.

Your old place is no better expect problems again in 6 months.

It's not uncommon for a better offer to be made after someone has either resigned or made it clear that they WILL resign or that they have another job to go to.

However, as getmore4less so aptly puts it:
Before you start you want to see the trucks outside fully manned.
And you definitely want the offer from your previous employer in writing, setting out definitely what it is you've agreed to.
