Marriage certificate/joint mortgage

Hi all

I am.hoping to apply for a mortgage with my.husband who is here on a spouse visa (will be eligible for indefinite leave to remain next year.) It has occured to me that the lender may wish to see our marriage certificate. We were married abroad and the original marriage certificate is in a foreign language. We had it translated and certified by an approved home office translator. This was enough evidence to prove we were married to the home office who have granted 2 spouse visas.

Does anyone know if this is enough evidence for mortgage providers? There is no longer an option to register your marriage in the UK if married abroad and the guidance simply states if it is legal in the country you are married in it is legal in the UK

If anyone has any experience of this advice would be much appreciated

Thank you

Having gone through the same process while on a visa (married in a non-EU country) in 2014-15, neither the broker nor the lender needed any proof of us being a married couple whatsoever.

All they needed was evidence of the visa.

To add, there is no requirement of being married to own a property jointly, or to have a joint mortgage.

But I also know of a lender (Yorkshire building society) who asked to see the marriage certificate of two British citizens, who owned the property jointly and were applying for a joint mortgage. They all have different rules which change all the time, so who knows?
