If you want to help him then dont lend him any money - ask how does he keep getting into debt as there seems to be a cycle.

What he needs to do IS get himself into a debt management programme or an IVA.

Tell him to speak to a debt charity, stop paying his loans and credit cards etc for a 4-6 months....that should trash his credit file enough for every lender to stop lending to him for the next 6 years.

The big question is, should I borrow him the money?

You mean lend him the money. The answer is no.

What should I have in regards to documentation to try and protect myself just in case he can't, or wouldn't pay back?

No such protection is available so anything you try to do in that respect is futile.

If you had read any of the threads on these boards about lending money to 'friends' you would not even have asked the question. Do yourself a favour and learn from other peoples (very expensive) mistakes.

The solecism of confusing 'borrow' with 'lend' is quite common, especially in Northern Irish idiom. It is not necessarily seen as incorrect, though it does sound odd.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I believe he would prefer it if I just borrowed him the money Instead of going through to some type of debt management solution.

Of course he would. It would allow him to continue to live the lifestyle he can't afford with no consequences.
