Yes a seagate one with a 5 year gurantee instead of a 1 year - you can also pick it up in a store and have it in your hands this afternoon - no waiting for delivery, no missed delivery, easy returns ............ remember you experience with Morgans -"Mine arrived from Morgan Computers in a "very" tatty box. The car cigarette lighter lead had a bad nick in it. Despite a phone call and 5 emails I have not had a response. They are branded Ford on the start up screen. If these are 'factory' refurbs then my auntie is my uncle. A factory refurb should be as new, not this second rate rubbish. Customer service is non-existant from this bunch of cowboys."0 -
Does the seagate have 8MB or 16MB buffer?Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle. :A0

It doesn't say on the Maplin site, but on Amazon it says 8MB.
What's the difference anyway? I just bought the seagate one from Maplin last week for OH...have I made a boo boo
The "buffer" I'm referring to is the transfer buffer that temporarily stores data to read from or write to the hard drive. The reason for this is that the bus (data channel between the hard drive and the motherboard) can only handle so much information at a time, and it takes a long time for the data to be found and retrieved from a platter (random seek time), so it takes a big chunk of the requested data and stores it in a very fast data buffer to be sent at the bus's convenience. So with a larger buffer you can queue more data for transfer over the bus without having to keep sending requests to slowly find more data from the platters. Some newer drives come with as much as 8MB of buffer capacity, but it is more common to see 2 or 4MB. Usually a drive with a large amount will use that as a selling point and print it on the box/website, otherwise you can assume it has a 2/4MB buffer. My advice is to find one with as much as you can afford.

I doubt it - I bought the 320 gb Seagate a couple of months ago - it's a great drive. Not many people would notice the diffrence between 8mb and 16mb - it depends on what you are using it for - in reality, if you need to ask whether it will make a diffrence, I don't think it will.;)0 -
