Private or NHS ENT treatment?

Options
Hi Folks,
Had fish bone issue in my throat and so frustrated with the NHS. No CT scan requested just 1 x-ray which does not shows the tiny fish bone and in depth mouth examination, just a basic spoon look-in. Had a nasal endoscopy done which painful carried out by a young trainee doctor without my consent and later the consultant did it which was not that painful. I was more a like guinea pig for her to test me. Thought consent was required.

The test revealed no bone but fungal infection, which was strange. He prescribe me anti-fungal med but even after few days of taking med, the pain is still there in the same location, though it comes on and off. Not sure if the bone scarred my esophagus and got infected. Still feel pain on lower left hand side ear.

So... when the young trainee doctor put a camera in your mouth without your consent- how come you didn't say:
"Errrr... excuse me... you have just put a camera in my nose/ mouth and I would like you to remove it?"

Why do you think you need a CT scan?

No-one gets a CT scan for a fish bone, it probably wouldn't show up anyway and you don't want to irradiate your neck which has some sensitive structures in it. The gold standard is to have a direct look with a nasendoscope. You had two and no-one has seen the bone, the vast majority of them pass themselves. If they;ve seen candidiasis, then give the treatment some time to work.

Also, you gave implied consent to the nasendoscopy by allowing it to continue, why didn't you ask them to stop?

    Sounds like standard treatment.

Have you finished the meds? If not, then I would not think there is a problem. The meds will still be working on it.

If you're frustrated and dissatisfied with the treatment you've received from the NHS, just pay for private treatment if you can afford it or if you have private health cover.

The title of your thread refers to 'Private or NHS ENT treatment?' but you've not mentioned it in your post.

    Thanks for the reply.

Only had one Nasendscope done and he wrote down drug Fluconzole after seeing fungal infection but the team whose job is to prescribe near the reception thought it might damage the kidney without testing my kidney, so they 'Streaming team' as they're called in A&E, prescribed a lesser drug Nystatin, which is now finished but has had no effect.

I still feel something in my throat each time I swallow, so not sure it's if it's the scar left the bone or bone it self, though no sharp pain, or effects of throat candidiasis. I don't even know the extent of the infection, as they don't have time to tell you.

If you are not happy then go to your GP who will refer you if he thinks it necessary.
