error on previous years self-assessment

I completed my first self-assessment last year for 2017-2018. I've just done 2018-2019 but in doing so I've realised that the previous year is wrong. I realised whilst completing 2018-2019 that my tax code had changed. Prior to self-assessment my tax code was always different to the norm because of medical insurance and some flat-rate job expenses. I didn't add these figures to my self-assessment for 2017-2018 as I thought they were covered in my tax code. Whilst speaking to HMRC this year regarding 2018-2019 it transpires I should have included these.

Basically it means I over-paid tax for 2017-2018. It isn't much but is too late to try and get it back?

You can amend and resubmit your 17/18 tax return any time up to 31/1/20.

Thanks, I did that a few weeks back. They owe me about £50, but I haven't heard anything back. do you know if they just adjust my tax code? Previously they paid me into my bank account but it was a more significant sum previously.

HMRC do not refund overpaid tax from one tax year through your tax code for a different tax year.

If you owed tax for 2017:18 and that is being collected through your 2019:20 tax code and the amount owed had been reduced because of your amendment then a revised tax code would be appropriate.

Did you actually claim a repayment when you filed the amended return for 2017:18?

And have you checked your Self Assessment account to see if the adjustment to your account is showing up and if the overpayment is shown?

I couldn't see any reference to the over-payment on the online account, but I went in to check today after you said that and amazingly it was on the opening this time, so all good. thanks.
