Some years ago, I saw a hint on TV which said you could add up to the equivalent weight of water (or milk) to butter to make it into a spreadable version.
I have tried it, but put half as much water as butter. It was fine, and spread straight from the fridge, and made the butter last a bit longer. You can't use it for cooking in the same way, but that's the same as the spreadable stuff you can buy, or even soft margarines.

cheers all - I'm going to try adding some milk to the butter - will let you know how i get on :) I am still suspicious of diglycerides (sp?) and confused about which kind of satuarates are ok and which not so most margarine labels are a mystery to me :)

I'm pretty sure Lidl's butter is cheaper, but cant remember the exact price.

I buy value butter from Mr T and cut off one third - I put one piece at a time in the butter dish and keep it on the side in the kitchen - it keeps for days - then I put the other two thirds in the fridge and just top up the dish when empty.

It means I never have to throw butter away and there is always some ready to spread. (except when my house is freezing!!!)

    Hope that helps :)

ps My butter dish is a LURPAK one that I sent off a couple of quid and tokens for a while back - I love it !!!

I never eat any sort of marge after a chemistry experiment we did at college. We analysed the contents of butter vs various spreads and I was quite shocked at the range of diff fatty acids in there and the fact that there were heavy metals to be found in every single one of the spreads (very small amounts). I've prob thrown out the old lab books from then so I can't remember the exact details!

Anyway, even Lidl butter is getting dearer, it's about 85p too.

And I got a nice plain white butter dish with lid in Sainsbury's

  • Asda's smart price butter yesterday was 85p. Probably not old style but I whack what I need in the microwave for a few seconds and it spreads fine, my mum always melts hers in front of the fire for a few mins

I like the idea of mixing it with oil, thanks, I'll give that a go
