.....for Dynamic Frequency Response reason, for which it has been very successful? I don't see the idea being wrong......

Absolutely agree with this, I think the idea is sound and as more batteries are deployed and the commercial arrangements mature I can see this developing to the stage where it provides a big additional benefit for battery ownership. I've put my money where my mouth is with this and paid a premium for a PowerVault system that has frequency response technology built in.

My negative comments / reticence stem from the commercial arrangements with Social Energy rather than the principle of frequency response. My impression is that as a customer you're taking more than your fair share of risk for less than your fair share of potential return, if that makes sense.

When the kettle switches off there'll be a split second when the Powerwall is still discharging and this is exported to the grid. It's then a race between the Zappi and the Powerwall to see this and react first.
My inverter is made by Goodwe and they have an app which enables you to monitor what electricity is going where and which updates the readings about every 3 seconds. So in my case I know it's not a "split second" but about 15 seconds whilst the battery output is ramped down after a heavy demand. Whilst this is happening the unwanted energy is exported to the grid.

Thanks for the comments mike thats very helpful. I must admit I am very dubious about that system and do not like the idea of being tied to a supplier.

Moixa have come back to say they arent. They have a grid share system so I am trying to find out more about that at the moment. It seems rather hard to simply find a supplier and be able to just sell back to say bulb any excess (my current supplier). I am not sure if moixa do that or if the grid share would work the same way.

I think it would be helpful for us even discounting the fact it one fully charge the cars. Any reduction would be welcome in bills but I am also keen to start trying to more of "my bit" for emissions etc

I am really intrigued to see how they come up with their 40K back over 20 years figures though!!!! Both the "social energy" quotes had these figures. Moixa less so but still a large sum!

Hi - a thought on another way of looking at this.....

    1. Your EVs create a fair amount of overnight load, and there's lots to be saved on charging costs if you switch to an Economy 7 tarriff (I pay < 6p per unit overnight)

    2. The catch with this is you then pay more for your daytime electricity (I pay just over 21p per unit during the day)

    3. What you could do, instead of looking at a solar panels/battery solution as a way of charging the EVs is to look it as a way of providing your daytime electricty to avoid paying the higher rate

    4. Ideally you'd do as much as possible of this by storing solar energy you generate yourself, but on "dark" days you can then charge the battery overnight with cheap rate E7

I suspect you'd find the economics of this favourable (reduced EV charging costs and "free" electricity during the day) as well as being a good way to save your bit of the planet.

Something to consider if you haven't already.....

    Thanks again! :)

Yep sort of on that. We had our smart meter fitted last week so just applied to go on to the variable rate bulb have which isnt as low as octopus but is still pretty low. Their main peak rate is only for about 3 hours early evening.

Thanks to Which? I have found the MCS page and contacted a couple of local installers to see what they can do too. I am a little cautious about the sales pitches we got so trying to educate myself as much as possible. Posts like these help me a lot so thanks again I do appreciate it!

Eek! That is seriously high. My day rate is 16.3p including VAT. Admittedly my night rate is slightly higher, at 6.32p, but I hope most of your usage is at the night rate! (Mine is about 55/45 Day/Night)
2kWp Solar PV - 10*200W Kioto, SMA Sunny Boy 2000HF, SSE facing, some shading in winter, 37° pitch, installed Jun-2011, inverter replaced Sep-2017 AND Feb-2022.

Hi - without the battery, my split to date is 87.75% night / 12.25% day due to a combination of storage heaters generating a high night load in the winter, low daytime use after years of gradually doing all the normal things (A+++ appliances, LED lights, etc.) and solar panels that further reduce the daytime use. With the PowerVault I'm aiming for 98% night / 2% day or thereabouts which is ambitious but not beyond the realms of possibility. Watch this space :):):)
  • Do not go to Social Energy, they admitted that they installed a system that was not DNO compliant that smart one meters which most of us have do not work with their system and because of this we cannot export. And without telling us off these and other issues still went ahead and installed. They have disowned the sales company that has blatantly promised that SE is the best there is. they are even trying to blame us for the crap install. And to rub salt into a very sore wound we have just  (july2020) received a bill from SSE for £800.00    Social Energy NO!! SOCIAL DISTANCING required on these sharks, be warned.    Anybody reading this and has issues with Social Energy please bring a complaint using Resolver its brilliant
