CH - I'm too hot!

The opposite to some of the other threads posted recently. I don't have a central heating thermostat in my house, so my main thermostat is on the boiler. I do have thermostatic valves on a couple of my newer radiators but not all and as the other radiators are quite old, it is not currently on the (massive) house improvement list to put them on the others. It is hard to adjust the old radiators with the valves I've got at the moment.

My problem is that the house gets really hot on the 'minimum' setting on the boiler. Even when the weather is incredibly cold, I don't often have to go much above it - and believe me, my old house isn't that well insulated (that is on the list as well). Even on 'minimum' in cold weather, I also end up with more hot water than I know what to do with. Is there any way of 'recalibrating' the boiler thermostat so it's idea of minimum is more like my idea of minimum?

The boiler is about 8 years old. I'll admit that my idea of 'really hot' might be other people's idea of tepid!

Boiler thermostats normally control the output water temperature of the boiler and do not refer to room or ambient temperature, so your boiler is set to push out 50 degrees, or whatever, if it's freezing cold or mid summer. Can you fit an external (room) thermostat and connect to your boiler? If the boiler is somewhere awkward you can now get wireless ones to allow you to place the sensor in the room of your choice.
  • Surely your radiators have a manually operated valve that you can use to turn some of them off?

  • Hi

You cannot recalibrate the boiler stat.
It's possible the stat has 'slipped' out of calibration, giving you a higher temp even when on 'minimum', and would need replacing
You might want to put a fully controlled system higher up your 'to do ' list as it sounds very basic.
