washing machine smells after I tried to clean it

My washing machine was fine but I hadn't done a clean in a while so I did a 90 deg wash with just soda crystals.

Now the drum really stinks and the clothes have started to smell if I don't take them out straight away.

What have I done and what can I do to correct it? It was fine before I cleaned it!

Have you checked the filter as you might have dislodged gunk in to the filter and now it can't escape

Good suggestion as I cleaned out the filter beforehand and not after. However no gunk just some large bits of limescale (so the clean did something)

Does the waste connect to a standpipe or a combination drain under a sink?

If it was mine I'd pop a drop of bleach down the standpipe and leave overnight before another hot wash tomorrow.

Sounds silly, but have you completed the maintenance exactly as in the user manual? Sometimes a couple of maintenance cycles are needed, especially when it has been a while (isn't it always? :p) .

Also different cleaning products are useful in different circumstances. Alkaline products are effective on fatty or conditioner build-up, acidic products on limescale from hard water, sterilising products on mould or bacteria. If you need a combination it is often safer and more effective to use a properly formulated commercial product.

    HTH! :)
