  • I’m in a similar situation, been getting letters from Cabot and now GDR, possibly from an old car debt from years ago...around 19 years , give or take a year... ended up giving the car back.
Never heard anything for years , then a few years ago, I’d get the odd letter from Cabot and now GDR, who now have escalated to their collections department.
I’ve a great credit report and have had for years.
I’ve never acknowledged the debt or paid anything towards it for at least 12 years.
Do I send a prove it letter ??
And what happens if they do prove it?

I think you can go straight to a statute barred letter
  • But what if it had a CCJ , it didn’t as far as I’m aware, but can’t be 100% on that.
Guessing Cabot would of let me know by now .
Would it hurt to send a prove it letter?

    Thanks

Makes no difference now, if there was one, they will tell you, most likely they won’t know anything anyway.

Don’t overthink this, send the SB letter, see how they respond to that.

  • Hi
Apologies for replying to a message that is old however google pointed me directly to this page. I am in a similar position in that I have received a letter from Cabot and Global Debt Recovery for a loan that dates back to 2007. I have had no correspondence from this until recently and the balance is unchanged from 2007.
Would I simply follow the same advice above and send the Statute Barred letter?
Also could I also check how the situations above played out?
    Thanks for the help.

I recently received a letter from Cabot/Global Debt Recovery about a disputed loan taken out over 15 years ago.
As I had moved the letter was sent to my old address, but was forwarded on by the new tenants. I have now advised them to either return any letters, or else put them in the bin.
I took advice and subsequently emailed a Statute Barred letter to them, also advising I had moved but withholding my new address. A few days later I received a reply which was basically a phishing email. I have not responded to this, but will wait to see if there is any further contact and act accordingly. Looks as though they are trying to clear their books of very old debt, even though it is definitely Statute Barred. Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

You've told them it's statute barred. The ball is in their court.

All they can  do is to start a court claim, which would be 100% defendable.

The problem is, if they did choose to do that then you would not get the claim as it would be sent to the old address and you have asked the present tenants not to pass things on to you. Cabot would then get a judgement in default and start looking for you.

Probably safest to get your mail forwarded.
