Can someone explain hampers?????????

Sorry to sound daft but what exactly are the hampers I keep reading about? Do you actually use a hamper to but goodies in? Do you keep to a theme eg hamper for a book worm? I like what I am reading but not sure of all the details. Any links to pictures would be great. Thanks for reading this. Love this site.

Its just a lovely way of giving something a bit more personal, and can be quite economical... the one above has cost me about £15.. and is for my sis and bil..so thats pretty good going for me..

i think the basic idea is to do those "gift boxes" that you can buy in the shops. You know the kind of thing: a selection of smellies or say, a mug, hot chocolate sachets, chocolates and a whisk. Usually overpriced as well! The idea is that you do something like that but very individual to the person that you're giving the gift to, and it (in theory at least) costs less than you would otherwise spend. Its something you have to be careful with, cos you can get carried away with the little bits, costwise, but as i said, it can be a wonderfully unique gift, and if you're creative, very beautifully wrapped as well that looks as though a huge amount has been spent on it.

To give examples: i know a friend is doing an italian hamper for her sister, which has a book about italy in it and lots of italian themed food (pannetone etc.). I myself am doing a food hamper for mom and dad - dad's is aimed at an older man, with things like chutney, cheese, pickled onions, port, chilli vodka, onion marmalade etc. Mom's is much sweeter: home made jams, chocolates, biscuits and cake, sweet liquors like sloe gin, damson gin, terry's chocolate orange vodka. Gran's is aimed at her memories: her family tree, a booklet containing the results of all the research i'm doing, a traditional stocking of the kind she would've had as a child (fruit and sugar mice!), and (hopefully) an annual of the kind she had as a child from ebay. Other people have done bookworm hampers, or cinema/video night hampers (tickets to the cinema or DVD hire vouchers, popcorn, fizzy drinks etc). These can be teamed with offers to babysit, for example, if you have family that live close by, so that stressed out moms and dads can have some time alone - sometimes things like that can mean more than a really expensive smelly gift.

Hope all that helps and gives you ideas for your own hampers. oh, and the containers for all these? they're as unique as the gift - my own food hampers are going in wooden boxes from the market, very rustic, wrapped in cellophane, other people might go for the glitz, a DVD hamper might be put into a HUGE box of popcorn.. use your imagination!

Don't forget you can use BOGOF offers to gather contents for hampers that way its not so expensive. Even using the freebie's page might be handy because you could perhaps gather some samples together and add them to a hamper.

Never thought of BOGOF what is wrong with me today! I planned to do one for my son and his wife as they are expecting their first baby in April, they want baby stuff for christmas. But I have decided to do a Diaper Cake for them. They don't want to know the sex of their little one but I know the colour scheme, beige cream soft green so looks like I will be having some fun.

Why is it that your German hamper looks more fesstive then similar British food? Super Christmas-y. Where did you find it all? Looks really effective, bet they'll love it.

    Hi there Hayles

Im living in germany at the moment :j ... and you are right..everything seems much more festive  .... they don't seem to do "commercial" like we do in the UK... everything seem lovely and traditional...

You can get quite a few bits in LIDL or ALDI.. stollen, lebkuchen, gleuwein.. but the choice here is massive and the prices are brilliant...the problem is knowing where to stop :D we are coming back to the UK for xmas/new year and have to get 6 baskets and 4 boxes in the car along with various other stuff..including 8 crates of beer :p ...but when you can get 20 X 0.5lt bottles of hubbies fave beer for about £3.80..it would be rude not to :rotfl:

That hamper comes in at about £16 including the basket...and as its for 2 thats pretty good i reckon.. but when you can get hold of bottles of wine for about £1.20 -and i have tried it (purely for research purposes of course;) ) and its rather nice...

Hope you find some lovely things in Aldi/Lidl for your hampers..
